The Democratic Rights Committee has been formed to stand against any infringement of democratic rights and freedom of expression through any means. This committee has been formed by bringing together over a hundred individuals from various professions in society, including teachers, students, writers, journalists, artists, lawyers, and doctors.
The committee was officially formed at a meeting held at the TSC Cafeteria of Dhaka University, where Emeritus Professor Sirajul Islam Choudhury was appointed as the convener. In a press release signed by the co-convener Samina Lutfa Nitra, it was announced that the committee’s main objective is to ensure the protection of democratic rights and freedom of expression for all citizens, to repeal repressive and anti-people laws, to ensure the independence of the judiciary, to protect the rights of workers and farmers, and to establish democratic campuses free from authoritarianism.
The committee has stated that after every popular uprising, there is a resurgence of fascism. The sacrifices made by the people go in vain, and the next uprising must not fail. Therefore, it is imperative for all forces participating in the democratic movement to unite under a cohesive platform. This is why the committee has been formed.
The committee’s joint conveners include Professor Harun-or-Rashid, Abdullah Kafi Ratna, Professor Tanjimuddin Khan, Seema Dutt, Maha Mirza, and Kallol Mustafa. The committee members include prominent figures from various fields such as academia, journalism, law, literature, arts, and filmmaking.
The committee aims to work towards various democratic demands, including the protection of human rights, the establishment of a democratic society, and the promotion of freedom of expression. With a diverse group of members from different backgrounds, the committee is poised to play a significant role in advocating for democratic rights and freedoms in the country.
In conclusion, the formation of the Democratic Rights Committee signifies a collective effort to safeguard democratic values and principles in the face of any threats or violations. With a strong and diverse membership, the committee is well-positioned to address various issues related to democratic rights and freedom of expression in society.
