In a significant move, the central government introduced online vehicle permits in 2018, which was later adopted by the state of Kerala in 2022. This online system aimed to streamline the process of obtaining permits for vehicles, especially for interstate travel. However, recent reports suggest that taxi vehicles from Karim Pattikara have been blacklisted due to outstanding dues in the online permit system. This has raised concerns among taxi drivers who are now unable to travel to other states without paying the necessary taxes.

The implementation of the online permit system was intended to make the process more efficient and transparent. Previously, obtaining a permit for a journey cost around 360 rupees, with Kerala registering vehicles charging 250 rupees for the same. However, recent audits have revealed discrepancies in the collection of service fees, with each journey not being charged the required 105 rupees. Additionally, a hefty fine of up to 15,000 rupees is imposed for vehicles found to be non-compliant during checks.

For those traveling to other states, it is essential to obtain the permit online before commencing the journey. Many individuals have reported difficulties in accessing the system due to the requirement of user names and passwords from the RTO office. This has led to delays in obtaining permits and has hindered travel plans, especially for those who need to travel at night or on weekends.

Furthermore, taxi drivers have raised concerns about the impact of these fines on their livelihoods. With vehicles from Karim Pattikara being blacklisted, drivers are unable to operate their vehicles until the dues are cleared. This has led to a loss of income for many drivers who rely on interstate travel for their livelihood.

In conclusion, the implementation of online vehicle permits has brought both benefits and challenges for drivers in Kerala. While the system aims to streamline the process and ensure compliance with tax regulations, it has also created difficulties for drivers who are now facing fines and blacklisting of their vehicles. It is essential for the authorities to address these issues promptly and provide support to drivers who are affected by the new system. Only then can the online permit system truly achieve its intended goals of efficiency and transparency in the transportation sector.
