Overnight, a large car meet at Gateway Plaza off the Sunrise Highway in Patchogue took a dangerous turn, resulting in one injury and one arrest. Suffolk police were called to the area around 1:15 a.m. to disperse the crowd, where one motorist was reported to have driven recklessly, fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed.
The reckless driver, identified as 19-year-old Danya Northington from Roosevelt, was arrested on charges of fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and reckless endangerment. Meanwhile, another 19-year-old female, whose name was not disclosed by the police, was struck by a vehicle performing donuts before fleeing the scene. The injured female managed to transport herself to a hospital with a serious injury.
Authorities were notified about the incident at approximately 3:30 a.m., prompting Fifth Squad detectives to launch an investigation into the matter. This unfortunate event sheds light on the dangers associated with reckless driving and the need for responsible behavior on the roads.
In addition to the incident at Gateway Plaza, police were also called to the William Floyd Parkway in Shirley and Route 25A in Sound Beach and Miller Place for reports of vehicles obstructing traffic. Officers successfully dispersed the vehicles, with a 2023 Dodge being impounded in Shirley after the driver abandoned the stalled vehicle and fled on foot.
