Acura, the luxury division of Honda, is set to introduce an electric performance car in its future lineup. This announcement was made by Shinji Aoyama, global executive vice president for Honda, at the 2024 Monterey Car Week. Aoyama described the upcoming vehicle as an „NSX-type of vehicle,“ hinting that it may not necessarily carry the NSX name. However, it will embody the spirit of the iconic NSX supercar.
The electric performance car will be based on a new Honda-developed dedicated EV platform, which is set to debut next year in an Acura SUV. This platform will also underpin the upcoming 0 (Zero) Series of EVs from Honda. Aoyama revealed that the car will not utilize solid-state batteries but will benefit from Honda’s thin and lightweight development approach for its electric vehicles.
Acura’s electric performance car will be manufactured at Honda’s production facility in Ohio, which is currently undergoing retooling to produce EVs and their components. The facility, now known as the Honda EV Hub, is also home to the Acura Performance Manufacturing Center, where the last generation of the NSX was built. It is likely that the new electric performance car will also be produced at this site.
Last year, Acura teased a concept for an EV called the Acura Electric Vision Design, which hinted at the brand’s future electric lineup. The concept bore a striking resemblance to a future evolution of the NSX, showcasing Acura’s commitment to electrification while staying true to its performance heritage. Acura boss Jon Ikeda had previously hinted at plans for a third-generation NSX, suggesting that it would be powered by a different type of powertrain than its predecessors.
Overall, the introduction of an electric performance car in Acura’s lineup signals the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. By leveraging Honda’s expertise in electric vehicle technology and manufacturing, Acura aims to deliver a high-performance electric vehicle that embodies the spirit of the NSX while embracing the future of mobility. With the new dedicated EV platform and production facility in Ohio, Acura is poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market.
