Officers attempted to wake the man up, but when he awoke, he hit a vehicle with his car and quickly left the area.
Shortly after, police located the man at a gas station on US Highway 98 North. However, the suspect fled once again, leading to a chase by law enforcement. The situation escalated when the man was found in the parking lot of a shopping plaza on US Highway 98. It was here that the suspect allegedly rammed two police vehicles, prompting an officer to fire several shots at the suspect’s vehicle.

The pursuit came to an end when the suspect crashed his car on Wegewood Estates Boulevard near Douglas M. Cook Park and was subsequently arrested.
The suspect was identified as John Alfred Hofman, a 57-year-old resident of Webster, FL. Hofman was taken to the hospital for evaluation before being transferred to Polk County Jail. Fortunately, he did not sustain any injuries during the incident. However, one officer did suffer minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.
It was revealed that Hofman had outstanding arrest warrants in Sumter County and Volusia County, with a lengthy criminal history that included 30 criminal charges and ten felony convictions.
