CTE initiative originating in Lane County expands to cover the entire state

The Future Build program in Eugene School District 4J is providing students with valuable hands-on construction experience that is preparing them for employment right out of high school. This initiative, under Team Oregon Build, aims to meet the evolving workforce needs in Oregon by equipping youth with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the construction industry.

Initially launched in Lane County in 2022 as Constructing a Brighter Future, the program has since expanded its reach and partnered with other school districts across the state. With a grant of $2.6 million from the Oregon Department of Education’s ESSER III fund, the program has been renamed Team Oregon Build and now collaborates with Lane, Southern, and Mid-Willamette education service districts.

The program is a joint effort between the Lane Education Service District, Lane Workforce Partnership, and Lane Community College. It focuses on providing students with practical construction experience by building structures such as sheds and cottages. These structures are then distributed to local organizations in need, such as Everyone Village and Square One Village in Eugene.

Team Oregon Build stands out from other programs by maximizing the impact of its funding. With approximately $3 million, the program has been able to supply materials to 60 schools, enabling students to learn valuable construction skills. Additionally, the program connects with local industry partners to facilitate guest speakers and networking opportunities for students, increasing their chances of securing employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

One of the key components of Team Oregon Build is supporting Career Technical Education (CTE) teachers and their classrooms. Nearly 8,000 students statewide have participated in the program, with 18 schools in Lane County actively involved. Eugene School District 4J’s Future Build program, which began in 2021, has seen significant success in preparing students for careers in the construction industry.

For students like Conor McIver, Future Build has been a life-changing opportunity. McIver, who struggled in traditional classroom settings due to ADD and ADHD, found his passion in construction through the program. He credits Future Build with saving his high school career and providing him with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the industry.

As the program expands to include middle school students, the hope is to reach more students like McIver who thrive in hands-on learning environments. By offering practical construction experience and connecting students with industry partners, Team Oregon Build is bridging the gap between education and employment in the construction field.

Overall, the Future Build program in Eugene School District 4J is a shining example of how hands-on learning experiences can transform students‘ lives and prepare them for successful careers in the construction industry. Through partnerships with local organizations and industry leaders, students are gaining valuable skills that will benefit them both in school and in their future careers.
