Las Cruces‘ new shopping cart ordinance sparks worries about homeless targeting

The recent incident in Las Cruces, New Mexico, involving two men in a white pickup truck taking a shopping cart and dumping belongings on the ground has sparked controversy and raised concerns about the newly approved shopping cart ordinance. The surveillance video released by the Las Cruces Police Department captured the men in the act, leading to confusion about which store was involved. Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story clarified that it was not Albertsons, as initially thought, but a local store that reclaimed their shopping cart.

The incident gained attention after the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope shared it on their Facebook page, highlighting the potential impact of the shopping cart ordinance on individuals experiencing homelessness. The ordinance, approved by the City of Las Cruces, criminalizes taking shopping carts from stores, raising questions about its fairness and potential consequences for vulnerable populations.

Nicole Martinez, the Executive Director of Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, expressed concerns about the ordinance unfairly targeting people facing poverty and homelessness. She emphasized the importance of consulting with those affected and finding solutions to address their needs. Martinez has been in communication with Police Chief Story to explore ways her nonprofit can assist individuals once enforcement of the ordinance begins.

Despite efforts to work with the community outreach team of the Las Cruces Police Department, concerns remain about the impact of the ordinance on those without homes. Martinez and her organization are focused on providing services and support to help individuals carry their belongings once the grace period for businesses expires. Collaboration between local organizations and law enforcement is crucial to ensure that individuals facing homelessness are not disproportionately affected by the ordinance.

As discussions continue about the implications of the shopping cart ordinance in Las Cruces, it is essential to consider the perspectives of all stakeholders involved. Finding a balance between addressing the concerns of businesses and protecting the rights of individuals experiencing homelessness is key to creating a fair and inclusive community. By working together and seeking input from those directly affected, Las Cruces can strive to find solutions that benefit everyone.
