Faith community leaders working to restore society in the aftermath of riots

In the wake of the recent violent disorder in over 20 cities and towns across England, faith community leaders have come forward to share their experiences and concerns. Muslim women, in particular, have been feeling anxious and fearful following the unrest. However, amidst the chaos, these leaders have also witnessed a different side of Britain – one where civic society has come together and faith groups have supported each other.

Julie Siddiqi, founder of Together We Thrive, expressed how challenging the past few weeks have been for Muslims and many others. The rapid escalation of the riots was alarming, but she found solace in the response from the majority of the country. Her organization encouraged mosques to open their doors to locals for tea and conversation, leading to moments of friendship and unity.

Imam Musharraf Hussain from the Karimia Institute in Nottingham highlighted the support Muslims received from various sectors of the community in the aftermath of the riots. He attributed the unrest to rising Islamophobia within the government and called for Islamophobia to be recognized as a crime.

Gary Newby, a content editor at ITV News Central in Birmingham, shed light on the challenges faced by journalists covering the riots. Despite the risks involved, local journalists worked tirelessly to tell the stories unfolding in their communities. They also highlighted positive aspects, such as the outpouring of support for refugees and asylum seekers in the aftermath of attacks.

The impact of the riots on education was discussed by Ed Pawson, a religious education teacher and adviser. He emphasized the need for schools to help children navigate the complex world around them and promote critical thinking skills. Dr. Kate Christopher echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of allowing teachers to have difficult conversations with students without fear of backlash.

Manjit Kaur, chair of the Coventry and Warwickshire standing advisory council on religious education, emphasized the role of social media in influencing young people. She advocated for discussions about the recent events in the curriculum to address the impact on students.

The Rev Dr. Israel Oluwole Olofinjana posed the question of what it means to be British and called for a collective notion of humanity that does not demonize certain communities. Amrick Singh Ubhi, director of civic engagement at the Nishkam Centre in Birmingham, emphasized the need for long-term plans to protect future generations from the trauma of current events.

In response to the unrest, the government has taken steps to engage with faith groups and address concerns. Faith leaders are encouraged to reach out to the new faith minister, Lord Khan, to voice their concerns and collaborate on solutions. The goal is to reset the relationship between faith groups and the government for a more inclusive and peaceful society.

In conclusion, while the recent events have caused fear and uncertainty, faith community leaders are hopeful for a future where unity and understanding prevail. By coming together and taking proactive steps, they aim to create a society where everyone can coexist peacefully and respectfully.
