Minneapolis police chief and Hennepin County attorney’s office point fingers after shooting of 4 kids in stolen car

The recent incident in Minneapolis where four children were shot in a stolen vehicle has sparked a heated debate between the Minneapolis police chief, Brian O’Hara, and the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, led by Mary Moriarty. The incident involved two boys and two girls between the ages of 11 and 14, with one of the girls in critical condition. Chief O’Hara expressed frustration at the lack of consequences for youth involved in crimes with stolen cars, pointing out that two of the children had been arrested just two weeks prior.

In response, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office emphasized the need for early intervention and effective interventions for youth involved in criminal activities. They stated that none of the children involved in the shooting had been referred to their office for youth auto theft early intervention. This led to a back-and-forth between Chief O’Hara and the county attorney’s office, with O’Hara insisting that cases had been referred to them previously but no action was taken.

The Hennepin County Chiefs of Police Association also weighed in on the matter, urging collaboration between law enforcement and the county attorney’s office to hold criminals accountable, provide necessary interventions for youth, and prevent recidivism. They emphasized the importance of working together to prioritize the safety and well-being of citizens.

The incident has also brought to light previous disagreements between O’Hara and Moriarty over youth crime. In March, Moriarty announced a new youth diversion program aimed at providing resources for intervention before situations escalate. O’Hara pushed back against accusations that the police department was not doing enough to address the issue, highlighting the efforts of officers on the ground.

Community members, such as the leaders of the Agape Movement, have expressed frustration with the cycle of youth crime and called for unity in response. They emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing the issue and building relationships with young people to prevent further incidents.

Overall, the incident in Minneapolis has highlighted the complex challenges surrounding youth crime and the need for a collaborative approach involving law enforcement, the legal system, and community organizations. It serves as a reminder of the importance of early intervention, effective interventions, and community engagement in addressing the root causes of criminal behavior among young people.
