Fall Conference Highlights Higher Education Trends, Academic Achievements, and New Initiatives

As the new academic year begins at Cal Poly Pomona, University President Soraya M. Coley delivered her annual Convocation address, reflecting on the challenges facing higher education, outlining future plans for the university, and celebrating the successes of individuals and teams on campus. The event, which marked the start of Fall Conference, set the tone for the upcoming year and highlighted the importance of addressing the evolving landscape of higher education.

Coley began her address by acknowledging the shifting trends in student mindsets and the challenges universities face in attracting and retaining students. With a decrease in the percentage of high school graduates considering a four-year degree, colleges are grappling with the need to adapt to meet the changing needs and expectations of prospective students. Despite these challenges, Cal Poly Pomona continues to see high numbers of student applications, positioning the university favorably in a competitive landscape.

To address these challenges and ensure student success, Coley outlined several initiatives that are underway at Cal Poly Pomona. The university has been making significant progress on the Future Career Path Initiative, providing paid micro-internships to students and collaborating with community partners to offer valuable experiential learning opportunities. Additionally, efforts to enhance enrollment and retention will focus on expanding access to financial aid, strengthening mentorship programs, and providing support systems to help students navigate the academic rigors of university life.

In her address, Coley emphasized the importance of creating a campus culture that celebrates diversity and fosters a sense of community. The development of the „Principles of Community“ at Cal Poly Pomona reflects the university’s commitment to promoting cultural competency, respect for diversity, and empathy among faculty, staff, and students. By creating an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and valued, the university aims to cultivate a space for intellectual growth and intercultural development.

The Convocation address also highlighted the achievements of individuals and teams on campus, including the Roots House project, which won the annual One Team Award for its sustainable and affordable housing design. The collaborative effort involved students from multiple disciplines and exemplified Cal Poly Pomona’s commitment to engaged learning and hands-on experience. Additionally, the „Dreams of Success“ video series produced by MediaVision and Strategic Communications received recognition with two Telly Awards, showcasing the talent and creativity of the university community.

As the academic year progresses, Cal Poly Pomona remains dedicated to supporting student success and providing resources to help students thrive. Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Terri Gomez, shared her personal story and highlighted the university’s progress on Graduation Initiative 2025, focusing on improving graduation rates for underrepresented minority students. With initiatives like the Black Thriving Initiative, support for Native American and Asian Pacific Islander Desi American students, and the upcoming CPP Latinx Excellence and Belonging initiative, the university is committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.

In conclusion, President Coley’s Convocation address set the stage for a new academic year at Cal Poly Pomona, emphasizing the importance of adapting to the changing landscape of higher education, supporting student success, and fostering a culture of diversity and community on campus. With ongoing initiatives and a commitment to student-centered approaches, the university is poised to continue making a positive impact on the lives of its students and the broader community.
