Therapy dogs are making a positive impact on children at York Day Early Learning Center

Annie, the mini goldendoodle therapy dog, has quickly become a beloved addition to the York Day Early Learning Center in York City. Along with her partner Finn, Annie is part of a new program aimed at helping children between the ages of 0 and 5 with their social and emotional development. The presence of therapy dogs like Annie and Finn has already shown positive results in the students at the center, prompting the staff to make this program a permanent fixture.

The decision to introduce therapy dogs at the center was driven by a noticeable increase in emotional control and social skills issues among children, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Executive Director Sara Bradley recognized the need for additional support for children and families who were on long waiting lists for services. Annie and Finn have been instrumental in helping students transition between settings, manage anxiety, and provide comfort during difficult moments.

Unlike service or police dogs, therapy dogs like Annie and Finn are specifically trained to provide emotional support and comfort to individuals in need. These dogs undergo rigorous training to ensure they are well-equipped to handle a variety of situations in a therapeutic setting. The impact of therapy dogs on individuals has been well-documented, with studies showing improvements in morale, stress levels, and overall well-being.

Annie was carefully selected for the program out of a litter of puppies and underwent extensive training to prepare her for her role at the center. With the support of PNC Bank and a local training company, Annie and Finn have been able to receive the necessary training to excel in their roles as therapy dogs. Their presence at the center has been met with enthusiasm and joy from both students and staff alike.

As Annie and Finn prepare to begin their full-time duties at the center in September, the staff is excited about the positive impact they will continue to have on the children in their care. These therapy dogs will be available during all open hours to provide support, comfort, and companionship to those in need. Whether it’s a hug, a belly rub, or just a friendly presence, Annie and Finn are ready to work their magic and make a difference in the lives of the children at York Day Early Learning Center.
