The Complexity of Charging Your Electric Car: Estimating Costs

Electricity pricing for EV charging sites can be a complex and frustrating issue due to demand charges. These charges are based on the highest usage in short intervals during a pay period, leading to high fees for some charging site hosts. Rachel Moses from Electrify America mentions that demand charges can reach hundreds of thousands annually for specific sites. This can make it challenging for charging site operators to predict and manage their costs effectively.

In addition to demand charges, some utilities also implement peak pricing, where electricity costs more during times of high demand, typically between 4 pm and 9 pm. This can result in slightly unpredictable charging prices for EV owners. Electrify America adopts a station-specific pricing approach, charging more for stations that are more expensive to operate. On the other hand, other EV charging companies use a broader approach, averaging out costs across their network to determine pricing.

Furthermore, companies are allowed to charge dynamic prices for EV charging, meaning prices can fluctuate. However, there are regulations in place that prevent chargers built with public funds from changing prices mid-charge. Despite these regulations, it can still be challenging for drivers to predict what they will pay to charge their vehicles at public fast chargers, leading to frustration among EV owners.

While the uncertainty surrounding public charging station pricing can be frustrating, it is essential to consider the broader picture of EV ownership. The real advantage of owning an electric vehicle lies in the flexibility of charging locations. While public fast chargers are convenient for long trips, the majority of EV drivers have access to home charging options. This includes outlets and slower level 2 chargers at home, work, or grocery stores, making it easier for drivers to top up their vehicles regularly.

Kellen Schefter from the Edison Electric Institute emphasizes that replicating the gas-station model for EVs may overlook the true benefits of electric vehicles. Instead of solely relying on public charging stations, EV owners can take advantage of the convenience of charging at various locations. While public chargers play a crucial role in supporting EV drivers without access to home charging options, they are not the primary source of charging for most EV owners.

In conclusion, while the complexities of electricity pricing for EV charging sites can be frustrating, it is essential to consider the broader charging landscape for electric vehicles. By leveraging home and workplace charging options, EV owners can minimize their reliance on public fast chargers and enjoy the convenience of charging their vehicles in various locations. As the EV infrastructure continues to evolve, it is crucial to focus on the overall benefits of electric vehicles rather than getting caught up in the challenges of public charging station pricing.
