Explore upcoming home and garden events in New Orleans

This weekend, the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner will be hosting a Home Show on Saturday and Sunday. This event promises two days filled with information, demonstrations, and exhibits for both the home and garden enthusiasts. In addition to the home show, there will also be a food fest featuring samples, tastings, and recipes from over 20 brands of products, including new items from local companies.

The Louisiana Food Fest by Langenstein’s will offer attendees the opportunity to indulge in delicious treats and explore new culinary creations. The event will take place at the Pontchartrain Center located at Williams Boulevard at Lake Pontchartrain. Doors will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days, giving attendees ample time to explore all the exhibits and demonstrations. For those interested in purchasing and renovating an older home, the Preservation Resource Center is offering a daylong class on September 13. The „Fixer Upper 101“ class aims to help buyers evaluate, plan, and execute the purchase and renovation of older homes. Participants will learn how to assess a property, determine feasibility, plan the scope of the project, explore financing options, and work with contractors and architects.

The class will take place at 923 Tchoupitoulas St. Tickets for the class are $35 and can be purchased on the prcno.org website. This class is a valuable resource for anyone considering buying and renovating an older home, providing essential information and guidance throughout the process.

On September 14, the BK House in the French Quarter will host a Garden Symposium titled „Beautiful Spaces: A Symposium — Exploring the History and Legacy of New Orleans Gardens.“ The symposium will delve into the cultural legacy of Crescent City gardens, with topics ranging from New Orleans landscapes throughout history to formal parterre gardens and their creation.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include coffee, pastries, a box lunch, and a reception featuring herbal cocktails. Tickets for the Garden Symposium start at $50 and can be purchased on the bkhouse.org website. This symposium is a great opportunity to learn more about the rich history and design of New Orleans gardens.

In addition to these events, the Friends of Cabildo organization is hosting a Fall Member Lecture Series focusing on New Orleans cemeteries. The series will cover a variety of topics, with discussions led by cemetery scholar Emily Ford. The lectures will take place throughout August, September, and October, covering subjects such as cemetery repair and preservation, the history of New Orleans during World War II, and the cultural significance of food and race in the city.
