The National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) is currently appealing to the public and corporations for donations to raise RM9 million for an on-ground project aimed at vaccinating underprivileged girls against cervical cancer. This initiative is crucial in preventing the spread of this deadly disease among vulnerable communities.
Dr. M. Murallitharan, the managing director of NCSM, highlighted the organization’s annual expenditure of approximately RM10 million on activities that directly benefit the public. These activities include cancer awareness education, care, and support services for individuals affected by the disease. NCSM provides a range of services such as free cancer screening, diagnostics, treatment for rural and underprivileged communities, psychosocial support, transit housing for patients and caregivers, subsidised medication, and wellness programs.
In addition to these services, NCSM operates six centers that offer holistic cancer-related support to patients, caregivers, and the public. These centers include the Cancer and Health Screening Clinic, Nuclear Medicine Centre, Resource and Wellness Centre, Quit Smoking Clinic, Children’s Home of Hope, and Adults‘ Home of Hope.
This year, NCSM is focusing on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination as a preventive measure against cervical cancer. The organization plans to vaccinate 300,000 rural and underprivileged girls nationwide. While they have received 300,000 vaccine doses worth RM90 million for free from Merck Sharp and Dohme, they still need to raise RM9 million to carry out the vaccination project.
It is important to note that NCSM relies solely on public donations for funding and does not receive any government grants. To raise the necessary funds, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) will be organizing the Toyota „Start Your Impossible“ outrun on June 23. This event, held under the umbrella of Toyota’s global campaign, aims to raise awareness and support for NCSM’s initiatives.
UMWT president Datuk K. Ravindran emphasized the company’s commitment to helping those in need, particularly in the fight against cancer. Cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in Malaysia, underscoring the importance of raising awareness and support for organizations like NCSM. By participating in the outrun, individuals can make a significant impact on the lives of cancer patients and their families.
Proceeds from the outrun will be allocated to supporting NCSM in raising cancer awareness, funding research, and providing essential support services to patients and their families. UMWT has been actively supporting NCSM through the outrun for the past three years, demonstrating their dedication to the cause.
Established in 1966, NCSM is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur with branches in Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Perak, and Sarawak. Those interested in making donations to the organization can benefit from tax exemption. NCSM is currently under the patronage of His Royal Highness Sultan Paduka Seri Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan, Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah.
