New research reveals that potential terrorists can be identified through social media posts

In a groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at the University of Bath, signals in social media posts have been identified that can predict when individuals posting on far-right forums are likely to commit terrorist acts. This research sheds light on the potential for early detection of extremist behavior and offers valuable insights into the online behaviors of individuals who may pose a threat to society.

The study, published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, analyzed posts from convicted far-right terrorists and individuals holding extremist views who have not engaged in violent acts offline. By examining the content of these posts, researchers were able to pinpoint specific indicators that distinguished individuals who would go on to commit terror offenses. Posts related to logistics, operational planning, knowledge about weapons, and violent action were key markers of future extremist behavior, with these signals evident up to four years before criminal activity occurred.

Interestingly, the study found that discussions of far-right ideology and the expression of hateful views actually decreased the likelihood that a user would mobilize to violent action. This suggests that individuals who focus on acquiring know-how and developing capabilities for terrorism are more likely to pose a tangible threat than those who simply espouse extremist beliefs online.

Dr. Olivia Brown, Associate Professor in Digital Futures at the University of Bath and Deputy Director of the Bath Institute for Digital Security and Behavior, emphasized the significance of these findings in identifying individuals who are genuinely dangerous and likely to cause physical harm. By honing in on specific signals of risk in social media posts, law enforcement agencies can prioritize monitoring resources on individuals who are more likely to engage in terrorist activities.

The research team compiled a database of over 200,000 social media posts from 2011–2019, including content from convicted terrorists and individuals sharing extremist material on far-right forums. By analyzing these posts, researchers were able to develop a method for identifying individuals at high risk of committing terrorist acts, thereby reducing the proverbial „haystack“ of extremist content online.

Dr. Brown is now seeking funding to apply these research methods to analyze the January 6 Capitol Building riots in the U.S., with the aim of gaining further insights into the mechanisms of extremist mobilization. Additionally, she is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to develop tools for analyzing risk within social networks and monitoring online interactions in extremist groups.

This study represents a significant step forward in the field of digital security and counterterrorism efforts. By leveraging insights from social media posts, researchers have demonstrated the potential to identify and prevent extremist behavior before it escalates into violence. As technology continues to play a central role in shaping our online interactions, studies like these offer valuable tools for safeguarding society against the threat of terrorism.
