The issue of abandoned vehicles in housing areas has been a longstanding problem in Malaysia, causing public concerns and environmental harm. In an effort to tackle this issue, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has introduced the Online Motor Vehicles De-Registration System (e-Dereg). This system, known as e-Dereg, allows vehicle owners seeking to scrap their vehicles to complete the deregistration process online in under an hour, without the need to visit JPJ counters.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized that the e-Dereg system is designed for motor vehicles that are no longer fit for use due to various reasons, such as being permanently damaged or economically unviable for repair or use on the road. This initiative aims to provide a convenient and efficient way for vehicle owners to legally deregister their vehicles, rather than abandoning them or selling them to scrap metal dealers.
To ensure orderly vehicle scrapping and compliance with regulations set by the Environment Department (DOE), vehicle disposal through the e-Dereg system is only allowed at DOE-licensed Authorised Automotive Treatment Facilities (AATFs). Loke mentioned that the system has been developed in collaboration with E-Auto Sdn Bhd, a service provider company, and will be rolled out by Car Medic Sdn Bhd in Bandar Teknologi Kajang.
Vehicle owners have the option to either bring their vehicles directly to an AATF, request the company to conduct the process at their location, or arrange for towing services to the facility. Loke urged licensed AATFs to promptly activate their facilities to ensure nationwide availability. He highlighted the importance of the e-Dereg system in helping owners legally and promptly deregister their vehicles, thereby preventing them from being abandoned or sold to scrap metal dealers.
In Selangor, for example, tens of thousands of vehicles have been abandoned in neighborhoods and along roadsides, posing challenges for local authorities in disposing of them. Loke emphasized that selling abandoned vehicles to scrap metal dealers could pose risks, as their registration might remain in the JPJ system, exposing owners to unforeseen consequences. By using the e-Dereg system, owners can have peace of mind knowing that their vehicles have been properly deregistered from JPJ, eliminating any potential liabilities.
Overall, the introduction of the e-Dereg system by JPJ is a significant step towards addressing the issue of abandoned vehicles in housing areas. By providing a convenient and efficient way for vehicle owners to legally deregister their vehicles, the system helps to promote environmental sustainability and public safety. It is essential for vehicle owners to take advantage of this system to ensure the proper disposal of their vehicles and avoid potential risks associated with abandoning or selling them illegally.
