State Listens to Concerns and Revamps Diploma Proposal

The Indiana Department of Education has recently unveiled a significantly updated second draft of a proposal to redesign high school diploma requirements. This revised proposal, presented to the State Board of Education on August 14, aims to simplify the current system by introducing one base diploma with minimum requirements for all students, along with the opportunity for students to earn readiness seals aligned with their individual paths.

One of the key changes in the proposed base diploma is the increased flexibility and course options for earning credits in core content areas such as English, math, science, social studies, physical education, and health. In addition to these core subjects, students will also have the opportunity to take personalized electives, including career and technical education, performing or fine arts, and world languages.

By allowing students to focus their coursework towards a specific pathway, the new proposal aims to better prepare them for their future endeavors. Students will have the option to earn readiness seals in college enrollment, employment, and/or military enlistment, providing them with tangible goals to work towards.

The proposed honors seals are designed to enhance skill development, work-based learning experiences, and opportunities for students to earn valuable credentials. These honors plus seals build upon existing academic honors designations and are intended to further elevate the educational experience for students.

Feedback on the first draft of the proposal emphasized the need to balance flexibility and student choice while ensuring a well-rounded education for all students. It also highlighted the importance of rigorous yet attainable diploma requirements that prepare students for success, regardless of their post-high school plans.

Additionally, there was a strong emphasis on the importance of experiential learning opportunities, such as work-based learning or mentorship experiences, and the need to provide sufficient resources for school corporations to implement these changes statewide.

The collaborative process that led to the revised second draft received support from various stakeholders, including K-12, higher education, business, and industry leaders. Letters of support were received from institutions such as Purdue, Indiana, Ball State, Indiana State, and Vincennes universities, as well as Ivy Tech Community College and state associations for public school superintendents, principals, and counselors.

Moving forward, the second draft of the diploma rule will be finalized and posted on the Indiana Department of Education’s website. This will kick off a second round of public comment before a final draft is presented later in the fall. The public will have the opportunity to provide feedback online or through in-person public hearings for a period of 30 days.

Overall, the proposed changes to high school diploma requirements in Indiana aim to better prepare students for their future endeavors by providing them with a more flexible and personalized educational experience. The collaborative effort and support from various stakeholders indicate a positive step towards improving the educational landscape in the state.
