The UOC creates a robot to improve the digital learning experience

The University Open University of Catalonia (UOC) has recently unveiled an innovative robot prototype named Botter, designed to enhance the online learning experience for students. This robot is based on the concept of the Internet of Things, allowing it to interact with students in various ways and provide guidance and support throughout their learning journey.

Botter is not just a virtual assistant on a screen; it is a physical robot that can communicate through sound, light, and movement. By accessing data on the student’s progress and performance, Botter can provide real-time feedback and encouragement to help students stay on track with their learning objectives and schedules. In cases where a student may be falling behind, Botter is also capable of expressing disappointment to motivate them to catch up.

The idea for Botter originated from a collaborative effort between the eLearn Center and Seidor, a multinational consultancy firm specializing in digital technology. The project was driven by a team of psychology and IT experts from the UOC who identified key factors essential for successful online learning environments. These factors include personalized learning plans, engaging technology, and effective communication channels to maintain student interest over time.

Beni Gómez-Zúñiga, a professor from the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at UOC, emphasized the importance of personalized plans and technology in keeping students engaged. He highlighted the role of gamification and enhanced support in fostering a conducive learning environment for students.

Francesc Santanach, from the UOC’s eLearn Center, highlighted Botter as a new and innovative means of communication with students. By using physical objects that students can interact with, Botter offers a more personalized and effective way of engaging with learners. This approach also leverages cognitive technologies to enhance the learning process.

Baptista Borrell, director of Seidor2learn, emphasized the significance of emotions in learning. By incorporating feelings into the learning experience, Botter can influence behavior and foster commitments that are crucial for student success. This holistic approach to learning acknowledges the emotional aspect of education and aims to create a supportive and engaging environment for students.

The unveiling of Botter at SIMO Educación, a prominent learning technology exhibition, underscores the importance of integrating ICTs into education models. This initiative represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology to enhance the learning experience and provide students with personalized support and guidance.

In conclusion, Botter represents a cutting-edge approach to online learning, combining technology, personalized support, and emotional engagement to create a more effective and engaging learning environment for students.
