NYPD: 70-year-old driver loses control, crashes into Staten Island supermarket and other stores

On Friday afternoon, chaos ensued at the Manor Road Shopping Center in Castleton Corners when a vehicle struck multiple businesses within the plaza. The incident, which occurred around 2:33 p.m., left a trail of destruction in its wake.

According to the NYPD, a 70-year-old female driver lost control of her blue sedan, causing it to collide with several commercial establishments at 754 Manor Rd. The driver was subsequently taken to Richmond University Medical Center in stable condition, while thankfully, no other injuries were reported. The NYPD spokesman also confirmed that no criminality is suspected in this case.

Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, blocking off entrances to the shopping plaza as onlookers gathered to witness the aftermath of the crash. The SuperFresh grocery store within the plaza bore the brunt of the impact, with its entrance sustaining significant damage. Shattered glass and debris from a brick wall littered the area, and law enforcement restricted access to the store.

Just a few feet away, a damaged Hyundai sat with its front covered in glass shards and its bumper missing. The driver’s side door was seen leaning against bollards on the sidewalk, further highlighting the severity of the collision. Nearby, Todt Hill Wine and Liquors displayed signs of damage, with law enforcement cordoning off the area for investigation.

On the opposite side of the parking lot, a wall for a Chase Bank branch was visibly dented, exposing cinderblocks underneath. The extent of the damage caused by the vehicle’s impact was evident, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.

As this is a breaking news story, additional details are expected to emerge as the investigation unfolds. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the potential consequences of losing control behind the wheel. It also highlights the swift response and coordination of emergency responders in managing such situations effectively.
