A shocking incident has recently come to light in which a West Australian man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a plot to kill his ex-father-in-law in India. The 65-year-old man was attacked with a machete and shot in the back of the head in Kahlon village in Punjab, India, on February 2, 2023. Fortunately, the firearm misfired, and he survived the attack, although he sustained a fractured occipital bone and a serious brain injury.
Indian authorities swiftly took action and arrested three men in connection with the attack. However, their investigations led them to uncover the alleged involvement of a fourth individual – Shiv Sheetal, a 42-year-old man from Maddington, located about 20km southwest of the Perth CBD. It was alleged that Sheetal had been actively seeking people to carry out the murder of his ex-father-in-law.
Despite the serious nature of the crime, WA Police confirmed that they would not be seeking extradition for Sheetal. However, nearly two weeks after the incident, the 65-year-old man relocated to Western Australia to be with his family as he continued to recover from his injuries. Upon his arrival in Australia, WA Police initiated an investigation into the attempted murder.
During the course of their investigation, officers discovered that Sheetal had allegedly breached a family violence restraining order that had been taken out by his ex-wife on June 1, 2024. It was also revealed that the 65-year-old man had been receiving further death threats during this time. As a result, Sheetal was arrested and charged with one count of attempted unlawfully to kill.
Sheetal appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court, where he was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear in the WA Supreme Court on July 24 to face the charges against him. The case has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the serious consequences of domestic disputes and the lengths to which some individuals may go to seek revenge.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing family violence and conflict in a constructive and peaceful manner. It also underscores the need for authorities to take swift action in cases of domestic violence to prevent further harm and protect the safety of individuals involved. As the legal proceedings unfold, the community will be watching closely to see justice served in this troubling case.
