East African Community School is a private kindergarten and primary school located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The school has a capacity of 900 children and is led by a director who literally built it with his own hands. Despite the challenging political, economic, and social situation in Ethiopia, he managed to create a nurturing environment for children’s education. As a Tanzanian, he has faced difficulties as a foreigner in the country, making business in any field a tough discipline after twenty years.
The school boasts quality teachers, caregivers, and leadership, but it is in desperate need of educational resources such as desks, chairs, laboratory equipment, and computers to enable children to learn how to work with PC technology and succeed in their future lives.
It all began when I decided it was time to explore distant corners of the world and enjoy life now that my children had grown up. My journey led me to Tanzania, and a piece of my heart remained there. Tanzanians are warm-hearted people with pure souls, and from the first moment, I knew I would carry a piece of Tanzania with me forever.
In Tanzania, I met a wise and inspirational man from the Nyakyusa tribe named Mmboji Thabit Mwamwendesi, a linguist who studied languages and cultures of African countries at the University of Dar es Salaam. He traveled many countries in the black continent, where he lived and studied for some time, and decided to build a school because education is crucial for a better future for all Africans. Despite being Tanzanian, he chose to build his school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, due to favorable conditions at the time. From the beginning, he invested all his know-how, finances, and skills into this school, which he built with his own hands in his spare time while working his original job.
It may seem unbelievable, but he managed to build a school with a capacity of 900 children, providing them with quality education and an expanded curriculum of world and African languages.
The bureaucracy in present-day Ethiopia is a significant problem, and instead of supporting education, the government often makes it difficult for schools to carry out their important work. Schools lack textbooks for children, curricula for teachers, and other necessities for teaching.
If a school requests what it needs, it waits a long time and often ends up with nothing. The situation has become critical, and the school needs financial resources to be able to provide children with quality education necessary for success in today’s modern world. If the equipment cannot be obtained, the school faced closure. The school is a hub and a source of education for hundreds of children and a livelihood for more than 100 employees.
