Osaka Expo aims to become a „City of the Future“ in pursuit of Society 5.0 – Overview announcement by Impress Watch

The 「未来の都市」パビリオン at the 2025 Japan International Exposition Association has been unveiled as a showcase of the future society at the 2025 Japan International Exposition (Osaka-Kansai Expo). This pavilion, titled „Future Life Expo: City of the Future,“ is a collaborative exhibition project between the Expo Association and 12 companies and organizations. It aims to transcend organizational and industry boundaries, leveraging the knowledge and technological prowess of each participant to envision a city of the future that balances economic development with the resolution of societal issues under the theme of „Towards a Happy City.“

Located on the western waterfront of the venue, the pavilion boasts a facility area of approximately 4,800m2 (with a length of about 150m) and an exhibition area of around 3,300m2, making it one of the largest pavilions at the Osaka-Kansai Expo. The „City of the Future“ aims to engage visitors in a unique and innovative world where the „Cyber Field“ and „Physical Field“ are intertwined and fused through cutting-edge visuals and exhibits, prompting them to contemplate and envision the city of the future together.

The pavilion showcases a total of 15 future experiences created through the collaborative efforts of the Expo Association and the 12 sponsors. The exhibition is divided into the Expo Association-led „Common Exhibition“ and the sponsor-led „Individual Exhibition.“ The Expo Association has revealed details of the „Common Exhibition,“ including the „Theme Exhibition,“ „Common Exhibition 01,“ and „Common Exhibition 02,“ while the sponsor-led exhibits will be announced at a later date.

The design theme of the pavilion, inspired by the collaboration between the „Cyber Field“ and „Physical Field,“ is centered around the concept of „DOUBLE SKIN.“ The building’s design, incorporating natural light, illumination, and smoke effects, aims to convey a gentle and futuristic expression that changes its appearance between day and night, exuding a grand scale without being imposing.

Internally, the pavilion comprises three sections: „A Building“ for the Society 5.0 theme exhibition, „Common Exhibition 01“ for presentations on living and society, and „B Building“ for presentations on industry and society, along with the „C Building“ where the 10 sponsors‘ exhibits are located. Each section offers a unique perspective on the city of the future, engaging visitors in a journey of exploration and discovery.

The highlight of the pavilion is the theme exhibition titled „Super Time Lapse – 50 Billion Years of Happy Journey,“ featuring a 5m tall, 92m long, triple-layered screen displaying a captivating narrative of human evolution and societal progress towards the world of Society 5.0 from the perspective of happiness.

In „Common Exhibition 01,“ visitors engage in a dialogue with the future, exploring scenes of Society 5.0 and the city of the future from the perspective of residents. The interactive experience includes four „3D Cubes,“ each presenting stories related to housing, transportation, healthcare, and entertainment, inviting visitors to contemplate the various facets of happiness in the city of the future.

„Common Exhibition 02“ invites visitors to envision a future where societal challenges are addressed through the lens of Society 5.0. Through the use of special robot heads projecting images of the future city, visitors are immersed in a virtual experience of diverse industries and societies, exploring different scenarios created by various creators.

Overall, the 「未来の都市」パビリオン promises to be a captivating and thought-provoking showcase of the city of the future, inviting visitors to engage with innovative concepts and envision a harmonious and prosperous urban landscape. With its blend of cutting-edge technology, interactive exhibits, and collaborative spirit, the pavilion is set to be a must-visit attraction at the 2025 Japan International Exposition.
