Wukong’s popularity in China is fueling demand for AAA games, but the next one may be years away

The gaming industry in China has been buzzing with excitement following the unprecedented success of Black Myth: Wukong, a AAA title developed by Tencent Holdings-backed start-up Game Science. The game, which was released recently, has taken the gaming world by storm, garnering immense popularity both in China and globally. With sales topping 8.4 million copies within just three days of its release, Black Myth has generated over US$400 million in revenue on the Steam platform, according to data from market research company VG Insights.

The success of Black Myth has not only captured the attention of gamers but has also piqued the interest of investors and game developers in China. The emergence of China’s first AAA title has sparked a new wave of ambition within the country’s gaming industry, with developers now setting their sights on creating more ambitious and high-budget projects.

Allen Chan, a game developer in Beijing, expressed his excitement over the success of Black Myth, stating that it proves that Chinese developers are capable of creating and releasing AAA games. The game was developed over six years, with the team behind it growing from 13 to 140 members. Despite facing stringent regulations in China’s gaming industry, Black Myth managed to navigate the challenges and achieve remarkable success.

However, the road to replicating the success of Black Myth may not be easy. Zhou Huaming, a veteran game developer in Shanghai, highlighted the risks and uncertainties that come with investing in the gaming industry. The unpredictable nature of China’s gaming regulations has made investors and developers hesitant to embark on large-scale projects like Black Myth, which reportedly cost over US$40 million to develop.

Despite the challenges, Zhou remains optimistic about the future of China’s gaming industry. He believes that the success of Black Myth will attract more funding into the sector, encouraging developers to take on ambitious projects. However, he also noted that resources are likely to converge towards established game developers, leaving smaller studios at a disadvantage.

Olivia Qin, a mobile game developer in Shenzhen, sees the success of Black Myth as a confidence boost for Chinese developers. She emphasized the importance of passion and dedication in game development, noting that even developers working on less lucrative genres can achieve success if they put their hearts into their projects.

While the success of Black Myth has inspired hope for the future of China’s gaming industry, developers remain cautious about predicting when the next AAA title might emerge. Chan suggested that it could take years for another game of Black Myth’s caliber to be developed, as it requires a significant amount of time and experience to create such a masterpiece.
