Former Estonian environment minister Tõnis Mölder is currently under criminal suspicion for alleged involvement in bribery, as reported by ERR News. The Internal Security Service (ISS) issued the suspicions following an investigation on Thursday. Sworn lawyer Aivar Pilv, representing Mölder, stated that the suspicion revolves around the request for a bribe through another individual, with no actual transfer of the alleged bribe to Mölder. Pilv emphasized that Mölder denies receiving any bribe and has had no contact with the alleged bribe payer or provider.
Pilv refrained from disclosing the specific amounts involved in the alleged bribe, citing various figures indicated in the suspicion. He also mentioned that the suspicion extends to three individuals, including Mölder and the alleged bribe mediator. The NGO implicated in the case is the Kõo hunting society, based in Viljandi County, Southern Estonia. According to Pilv, the offer to Mölder was made by a board member of the hunting society, but the intermediary between the board member and Mölder remains unidentified.
The proceedings on Thursday involved extensive procedural actions, including searches and the filing of suspicions that continued late into the evening. The case has shed light on the practice of „protection money,“ where MPs secure funding for regional projects in exchange for support on state budget votes.
