The Penan community in Baram recently made a significant move by forming a council comprising all the community leaders and village chiefs known as the Penan KMKK Council. This council came together to show their support for the Sarawak government and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for their development plans for the Penan community. This resolution was presented to Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department, Datuk Gerawat Gala, during a special event held at Ba’ Muboi in Ulu Baram on August 25, 2024.
Gerawat Gala, in receiving the resolution, emphasized the importance of the Penan KMKK Council as the rightful channel of communication and voice for the Penan community. He highlighted that the council’s formation aims to prevent non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or other external parties from interfering with the development plans for the Penan community. This move signifies a united front by the Penan leaders to take charge of their own future and development.
The ‚Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat‘ event where the resolution was presented was described as historic by Gerawat Gala. It marked the first time that Penan leaders from across Baram had come together for discussions and decision-making. The consensus reached during this meeting is seen as a step towards freeing the Penan community from the influence of NGOs that oppose development and government initiatives.
Gerawat Gala also addressed the issue of NGOs that have been working with some segments of the Penan community, stating that their agendas may not align with the true needs and aspirations of the Penan people. He emphasized that the government has been the primary source of support for essential services like electricity, water supply, roads, and telecommunications in Penan villages. The government’s commitment to development projects that benefit the community was reiterated during the event.
The Premier of Sarawak has made it clear that development will not be forced upon any area where the local residents express their refusal. However, Gerawat Gala highlighted the importance of embracing development projects that could improve the livelihoods of the Penan community. He mentioned plans to extend road construction to connect more villages in Baram, paving the way for further development initiatives in the region.
In response to the Penan KMKK Council’s resolution, Gerawat Gala promised action and support. He proposed the registration of the council and the opening of an official bank account to facilitate funding for their activities. Additionally, he pledged Minor Rural Project (MRP) funds amounting to RM15,000 to kickstart the council’s initiatives.
Overall, the formation of the Penan KMKK Council and their resolution in support of government-led development plans signal a new chapter for the Penan community in Baram. By taking control of their future and working closely with the government, the Penan leaders aim to bring about positive change and progress for their people.
