Koenigsegg Jesko Attack has set a new lap record at the Laguna Seca race track in California. The hypercar, driven by Marcus Lunda, completed the 2.2-mile (3.54 km) track in 1 minute and 24.86 seconds, beating the previous best time by 0.58 seconds.
The Koenigsegg test driver achieved the record lap time during his first visit to the 66-year-old track, known for its infamous „Corkscrew“ turn. The Jesko Attack also showcased its track-focused design, including a massive rear wing for added downforce.
The Jesko Attack is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine with twin turbochargers. It produces 1,280 horsepower on standard fuel, but this figure increases to 1,600 horsepower when running on E85. The engine also delivers 1,500 Nm of torque.
This recent success is not the only achievement for Koenigsegg. Last year, another Jesko Attack car driven by Niklas Lilja set a lap record at the Gotland Ring race track in Sweden. Lilja’s time of 2 minutes and 56.97 seconds was nearly eight seconds faster than the previous record set by a Porsche 911 GT3 RS MR.
Looking ahead, Koenigsegg has set even more ambitious goals for itself. The company believes that its Jesko Absolut model can „comfortably exceed the 480 km/h barrier.“ Laboratory tests show that it could theoretically reach a speed of 500 km/h before hitting the rev limiter in ninth gear.
The current unofficial top speed record stands at 490 km/h, set by the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport in a one-way run. However, Bugatti has stated that they will no longer chase speed records, leaving the field open for competitors like Koenigsegg, Hennessey, and SSC to vie for the title of the world’s fastest production car.
In conclusion, Koenigsegg continues to push the boundaries of automotive performance with its impressive Jesko models. With record-breaking lap times and ambitious speed goals, the Swedish automaker is solidifying its position as a leader in the hypercar industry. The future looks bright for Koenigsegg as they strive for even greater achievements in the world of high-performance vehicles.
