Covering garments with this basic substance could lower your body temperature by as much as 8 degrees

CNN recently reported on a groundbreaking innovation in the world of clothing technology that could revolutionize how we stay cool during heat waves. Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed a flexible, chalk-based coating that can be added to fabrics to physically cool down the body. This innovation comes at a crucial time as extreme heat events become more frequent and intense due to climate change.

During tests in scorching summer heat, researchers found that the coating reduced the temperature underneath clothes by up to 8 degrees Fahrenheit compared to the air, and by up to 15 degrees compared to untreated fabrics. The coating works by reflecting the sun’s energy back into the atmosphere while allowing the wearer’s natural body heat to escape. This simple yet effective solution could provide much-needed relief to individuals struggling to stay cool in extremely hot environments.

Inspired by traditional limestone-based plasters used to cool homes in hot climates, the researchers coated fabric tiles with particles of calcium carbonate, the main component in limestone and chalk. The coating is entirely surface-level and does not penetrate or change the cotton fibers of the fabric. This means that it can be applied to nearly any commercially available fabric and can withstand multiple washes in the washing machine.

Cooling fabrics are not a new invention, but past designs have often been uncomfortable to wear and expensive due to rigid structures, complex manufacturing processes, and electrical components. However, the development of affordable, comfortable, and scalable cooling fabrics is gaining momentum as the threat of extreme heat continues to grow worldwide.

Researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, have also made strides in cooling fabric technology by using nanodiamonds to coat cotton fabric. This resulted in a temperature drop of up to 3 degrees Celsius compared to untreated cotton. The potential energy savings from using cooling fabrics could be significant, as lower use of air conditioning would reduce climate-polluting emissions.

While there are still improvements to be made, such as maintaining the efficiency of the fabric after multiple washes, the future of cooling fabrics looks promising. Scientists envision a world where cooling fabrics are not only used in clothing but also in buildings and cars to reduce energy consumption and combat the effects of climate change.

As more products enter the market, there is a growing opportunity to scale up the production of cooling fabrics and make them accessible to everyone. Affordable cooling fabrics could be a game-changer for vulnerable populations who are most at risk during heat waves and have limited access to cooling technologies.

In conclusion, the development of cooling fabrics represents a promising solution to the challenges posed by extreme heat events. With continued research and innovation, cooling fabrics could soon become a widely available and effective tool for staying cool in a warming world. CNN’s coverage of this groundbreaking technology highlights the importance of finding sustainable and practical solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
