New software is thwarting thieves targeting Hyundai and Kia cars

CNN recently reported on the positive impact of new anti-theft software updates released by Hyundai and Kia. According to a new analysis of insurance claim data, thefts of vehicles with the new software are decreasing, even as thefts overall remain high. The automakers implemented these updates in response to a significant increase in thefts of certain models over the past few years, fueled by social media posts that demonstrated how to steal the vehicles.

The data from the Highway Loss Data Institute revealed that „whole vehicle“ theft claims for Hyundai and Kia cars with the software upgrade are 64% lower compared to those without the upgrade. This indicates that the companies‘ solution is highly effective in deterring theft. The vulnerable vehicles in question are older models made before 2023, which lack basic anti-theft features like electronic immobilizers found in newer vehicles.

Between early 2020 and the first half of 2023, thefts of Hyundai and Kia models surged by more than 1,000%. To address this issue, Hyundai and Kia initiated a $200 million settlement and began offering free anti-theft software upgrades for eligible older models in February 2023. So far, over 2 million vehicles have received the update, showcasing the automakers‘ commitment to enhancing security measures.

Despite the success of the software updates, thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles remain high. Only about 30% of eligible vehicles had the security software installed by the end of 2023. While around 61% of eligible Hyundai vehicles now have the upgrade, not all vulnerable models can receive it due to hardware limitations. In such cases, Hyundai and Kia have been providing steering wheel locks as an alternative security measure.

Even with the new software, older Hyundai and Kia vehicles are still being stolen and broken into more frequently than other models. One possible reason for this is that owners may not be using the security features correctly. For the software to be effective, the vehicle must be locked using the key fob button, not the traditional metal key in the door lock.

Matt Moore, senior vice president of HLDI, believes that theft rates for Hyundai and Kia models will likely decrease as more vehicles receive the security software. He also noted that the wave of thefts was partly driven by social media fads, with videos on platforms like TikTok and YouTube showcasing how easy it was to steal these vehicles. Moore suggested that as the novelty wears off, the trend of stealing these cars for fun may diminish.

In conclusion, the implementation of anti-theft software updates by Hyundai and Kia has shown promising results in reducing vehicle thefts. While challenges remain in ensuring widespread adoption of the security measures, the efforts made by the automakers are a step in the right direction towards enhancing the safety and security of their vehicles.
