Significant Growth Expected in Turkey’s Mobile and Internet Sector by 2024

The telecommunications sector in Türkiye has seen remarkable advancements in the first quarter of 2024, as announced by Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu. The latest data released by the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) reveals some impressive statistics that showcase the country’s progress in this field.

One of the key highlights is the surge in the total number of mobile lines, which has reached approximately 94 million. What’s even more impressive is that 92 percent of these users have opted for 4.5G technology, indicating a strong preference for high-speed mobile internet services among the population.

In addition to the growth in mobile lines, the total number of broadband internet subscribers has surpassed 94.2 million, exceeding Türkiye’s population of over 85 million by 10 percent. Out of these subscribers, 74.4 million are mobile internet users, further emphasizing the widespread adoption of internet services in the country.

Türkiye has also made significant strides in expanding its fiber infrastructure, with the total length of fiber reaching 8,000 kilometers. This marks a 7 percent increase compared to the previous year, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the country’s digital infrastructure.

The number of fiber internet subscribers has also seen a notable increase, reaching 7 million. This indicates a growing demand for high-speed internet services that can support the needs of both individuals and businesses in Türkiye.

The average monthly data usage for fixed broadband subscribers has risen to 274.2 GB, while mobile subscribers average 17.7 GB. These figures demonstrate the increasing reliance on digital services and the need for robust internet connectivity in the country.

Uraloğlu also highlighted the presence of 3 companies and 2024 authorization certificates issued by BTK in the telecommunications sector. The net sales revenues for Türk Telekom and other operators amount to approximately 834 billion lira, underscoring the economic significance of the industry.

Moreover, Türkiye boasts 76.5 authorized electronic certificate service providers who have issued a total of 2024 million electronic certificates, including 7.6 million electronic signatures and 994 thousand mobile signatures. This indicates a growing emphasis on digital security and authentication measures in the country.

The growth in mobile lines has been particularly impressive, with the number reaching 2024 million and mobile subscriber penetration reaching approximately 93 percent. The majority of mobile subscribers, 85.6 million citizens, are using 4.5G services, showcasing a strong preference for high-speed mobile internet connectivity.

Machine-to-machine communication subscribers have also seen a significant increase, reaching nearly 10 million. This highlights the growing trend of interconnected devices and the potential for further advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT) sector in Türkiye.

The total number of mobile numbers ported has exceeded 179.7 million, with 21,002,358 number portability transactions completed in the first quarter of 2024 alone. This marks a 139 percent decrease compared to the previous quarter, indicating a high level of activity in the mobile telecommunications market.

Overall, the data released by BTK reflects a significant increase in both mobile and broadband internet usage in Türkiye. These advancements underscore the country’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its digital infrastructure and services, positioning it as a leader in the telecommunications sector in the region.
