At 43, I began Pilates and it transformed me

Pilates has been a game-changer for Sangeeta Patel, 54, who found relief from paralysing sciatica through regular practice. She attends two classes per week and credits Pilates with reducing severe joint pain for the past eleven years, with the past 18 months completely pain-free. For Sangeeta, Pilates is more than just a trend – it’s a life-changing practice that has transformed her physical well-being.

Sangeeta’s journey with Pilates began when she was living in Mumbai during her husband’s work placement. At the age of 43, she took her first class and was immediately hooked by the strength and vitality she felt after each session. Upon returning to London, she joined Korin Nolan’s Power Pilates studio in Beckenham and has been a dedicated student ever since. Despite the challenges of lockdowns, Sangeeta continued her practice virtually and has seen remarkable improvements in her overall health and mobility.

For Sangeeta, Pilates has been instrumental in managing lower-back pain that she had been experiencing for years. The strengthening of her muscles through Pilates helped reduce pressure on her joints and alleviate the worst flare-ups of pain. However, in 2023, Sangeeta faced a new challenge when she was diagnosed with acute sciatica caused by degenerative spinal discs. Despite a four-month hiatus from exercise, Sangeeta returned to her Pilates practice with renewed gratitude and determination. Today, she is pain-free and stronger than ever, particularly in her core.

The benefits of Pilates extend beyond pain management for Sangeeta. Her core strength supports her in various activities such as swimming, yoga, and playing padel. Inspired by her own transformation, Sangeeta is now pursuing her level three mat qualification to help other women experience the life-changing benefits of Pilates.

According to Korin Nolan, founder of Power Pilates UK, Pilates can be particularly beneficial for women over 45 who may be at risk of osteoarthritis. The low-impact nature of Pilates improves joint mobility and muscle strength, reducing pressure on the joints and easing associated pain. Nolan recommends beginners start with mat Pilates two to three times per week, focusing on form and core connection. As practitioners progress, incorporating a weekly reformer Pilates class can provide a more challenging workout that enhances balance and strength.

In addition to Pilates, strength training is essential for joint support, especially for those with osteoarthritis. Incorporating one 40- to 60-minute strength training session per week can further strengthen the surrounding muscles and provide additional support for the joints.

In conclusion, Pilates has been a transformative practice for Sangeeta Patel, offering relief from chronic pain and improving her overall strength and mobility. With dedication and consistency, Pilates can be a powerful tool for women to enhance their physical well-being and lead a healthier, more active lifestyle.
