Judges for the 2024 East Anglian Book Awards categories revealed

The East Anglian Book Awards have announced their full list of category judges for the upcoming year, showcasing a diverse and talented group of individuals who will be responsible for selecting the best books in various genres. The judges come from a range of backgrounds, including academia, writing, and publishing, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the judging panel.

In the Biography & Memoir category, we have Anamika Bhattacharjee, a PhD researcher in History at UEA. With her academic background and research skills, Bhattacharjee is well-equipped to evaluate the depth and authenticity of biographical works, ensuring that the winning book truly captures the essence of its subject.

For the Fiction category, we have Katherine Howe, an award-winning historian and novelist. Howe’s dual expertise in history and fiction makes her a perfect fit for this category, where storytelling and historical accuracy are equally important. Her keen eye for detail and narrative structure will undoubtedly lead to the selection of a compelling and well-crafted novel.

Yin Lim, a non-fiction writer and co-editor of Hinterland, will be judging the General Non-Fiction category. Lim’s experience in the world of non-fiction writing gives her a unique perspective on what makes a great non-fiction book. Her critical analysis and appreciation for the genre will ensure that the winning book stands out for its originality and insight.

In the History and Tradition category, we have Pete Goodrum, a bestselling writer and broadcaster. Goodrum’s passion for history and storytelling will bring a fresh perspective to this category, where the exploration of the past and its impact on the present is paramount. His ability to engage readers with complex historical narratives will be invaluable in selecting the winning book.

Poetry will be judged by Jessica Streeting, a poet and novelist. Streeting’s poetic sensibility and literary prowess will be instrumental in recognizing the beauty and power of language in the poetry submissions. Her discerning eye for poetic technique and emotional resonance will ensure that the winning collection leaves a lasting impact on readers.

Annie Rhodes, manager at Norfolk Children’s Book Centre, will be judging the Mal Peet Children’s Award. Rhodes’s experience in children’s literature and her dedication to promoting reading among young audiences will be key in selecting a book that captivates and inspires children of all ages.

The East Anglian Book Awards will announce the shortlisted books in November, with the category winners revealed in mid-January 2025. The overall winner, celebrating the best of publishing, writing, and reading in the east of England, will be announced in February 2025. In addition to the category awards, the Book by the Cover Award and the Exceptional Contribution Award will recognize outstanding achievements in writing and publishing in the region.

The East Anglian Book Awards, now in their 17th year, have been a platform for showcasing the talent and creativity of authors in the east of England. Past winners, such as Nick Acheson and Sarah Perry, have gone on to receive national recognition for their work, highlighting the impact of these awards on the literary landscape. Supported by the National Centre for Writing, Jarrolds, the Eastern Daily Press, and the University of East Anglia, the awards continue to celebrate and promote the rich literary heritage of the region.

With a distinguished panel of judges and a history of honoring exceptional writing, the East Anglian Book Awards are a testament to the vibrant literary community in the east of England.
