Wild animals, exotic birds, and several species on the brink of extinction have been found in multiple households in Iași County, following inspections by authorities, according to a statement released by the Iași County Police Inspectorate (IPJ).
During the inspections carried out from September 12 to October 7, 2024, the Iași Environmental Guard and the Lețcani Police discovered kangaroos, snakes, lizards, monitor lizards, exotic birds, and squirrels being raised by several individuals in the county.
The presence of wild animals, exotic birds, and endangered species in private homes raises concerns about the illegal trade and possession of protected animals. The Police Animal Protection Bureau reminds the public that actions related to the commercialization, possession, transportation, or exchange of animals belonging to certain protected native species may constitute offenses and are punishable according to current legislation.
Current legislation stipulates that individuals can only keep wild animals if they have a permit from the Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA). It is also prohibited to harm, kill, or capture wild animals, and during their breeding, hibernation, or migration periods, disturbing their peace or destroying their nests is not allowed.
The discovery of such a variety of wild and exotic animals in private homes highlights the importance of enforcing laws and regulations aimed at protecting endangered species and preserving biodiversity. It serves as a reminder of the need for responsible ownership and conservation efforts to ensure the survival of these vulnerable creatures.
The presence of kangaroos, snakes, monitor lizards, and other exotic animals in households in Iași County underscores the challenges faced in combating illegal wildlife trade and the importance of raising awareness about the consequences of exploiting and endangering wildlife.
As authorities continue to monitor and enforce regulations regarding the possession and treatment of wild animals, it is crucial for individuals to educate themselves on the legal requirements and ethical considerations associated with owning and caring for exotic species. By promoting responsible behavior and respect for wildlife, we can contribute to the protection and preservation of our natural world for future generations.
