Praktiliste oskuste abil saab parandada õpetajate heaolu ja stressitaluvust

The importance of supporting teachers‘ mental and emotional well-being in the education system cannot be overstated. Sotsiaalministeeriumi terviseala asekantsler Anniki Lai emphasized the critical role teachers play in shaping the future of our children and youth. In light of limited resources, investing in effective prevention activities that support teachers‘ well-being is essential. By enhancing teachers‘ practical skills, they can better cope with work pressures, leading to increased job satisfaction that positively impacts students‘ well-being.

To address the mental health of children and youth and achieve educational goals, the Ministry of Social Affairs funded additional initiatives in 2023-2024 to develop and assess teachers‘ social-emotional competence. An overview of international and local teacher training programs focusing on social-emotional competence was conducted, followed by a comparative study with a control group to evaluate the effectiveness of Gordon’s Teacher Effectiveness Training and the Mindfulness Minutes program for teachers. Additionally, a tool to measure social-emotional competence tailored for Estonian teachers was developed and tested for the first time.

According to Tiia Pertel, the head of the Children and Youth Department at the National Institute for Health Development, the social-emotional competence of professionals working with children, including teachers, is particularly relevant today. It helps them cope with stress, prevent emotional burnout, and enhance the perceived well-being of the school environment.

The results of the study revealed that participation in the Mindfulness Minutes program and Gordon’s training has helped teachers develop relationship skills, self-awareness, self-management, improve student relationships, and increase job satisfaction. These findings underscore the significance of investing in teachers‘ social-emotional competence to create a supportive and positive learning environment for students.

In conclusion, the efforts to enhance teachers‘ social-emotional competence not only benefit educators but also have a ripple effect on students‘ well-being and academic success. By prioritizing the mental health and well-being of teachers, we are ultimately investing in the future of our children and youth.
