Traveling to the Iberian Peninsula, specifically Madrid and Lisbon, opened my eyes to the homogeneity of our world. The presence of familiar American brands like McDonald’s, Dunkin‘ Donuts, and Burger King alongside stores like Ralph Lauren and Victoria’s Secret made it hard to differentiate between these European cities and ones back home in the United States. The prevalence of global brands like H&M, Banana Republic, Bose, Microsoft, and Google further emphasized the interconnectedness of our world.
Walking the streets of Madrid and Lisbon, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities in fashion trends. Skinny jeans, Lululemon apparel, and Converse All-Stars sneakers were ubiquitous, reminding me of the fashion choices back in the States. Even the hairstyles, tattoos, and facial piercings mirrored those of Americans. The fact that many Europeans spoke English fluently was a testament to the importance of language proficiency in our increasingly globalized world.
Despite these similarities, there were also distinct differences that added to the richness of the travel experience. In Toledo, Spain, the steep cobblestone hills challenged my mobility, making me appreciate the durability of the centuries-old cobblestones. Learning about Portugal’s „addiction“ to cod and the process of making port wine provided insights into the country’s unique culinary traditions.
One highlight of our trip was a week spent cruising the Douro River, where we marveled at the engineering marvels of the Carrapatelo Lock and the terraced vineyards that dotted the hillsides. The efficient and clean trains in Portugal stood out as a stark contrast to some of the transportation systems back home. Throughout our journey, the warmth and hospitality of the people we encountered left a lasting impression, reinforcing the idea that despite our differences, we are more alike than we realize.
As Mark Twain once said, „Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.“ Our travels to the Iberian Peninsula reaffirmed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of cultural exchange and understanding in bridging the divides that separate us. While I may have grumbled about the cobblestones and the language barriers, the overall experience of exploring new cultures and connecting with people from different backgrounds was truly enriching.
