The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team is gearing up for an exciting week ahead with a split road and home schedule. After a 1-1 week on the road last week, the Cowgirls are looking to bounce back and continue their strong performance in the Mountain West conference.
Last week, the Cowgirls secured a convincing sweep against UNLV, marking their first win in Las Vegas in nearly a decade. The team showcased their defensive prowess by holding UNLV to just a .146 hitting percentage. Wyoming’s ability to limit their opponents‘ hitting percentage has been a key factor in their success this season, with the team currently ranking second in the league with a .181 opponent hitting percentage.
Leading the defensive charge for the Cowgirls are Sarah Holcomb and Kayla Mazzocca, who are both tied for second in the Mountain West with 1.25 blocks per set. In the back row, Sierra Grizzle has been a standout performer, leading the league with 4.19 digs per set.
Offensively, Paige Lauterwasser has been a force to be reckoned with, pacing the Cowgirl offense with 3.46 kills and 3.81 points per set. Lauterwasser’s consistent performance has been crucial for Wyoming’s success this season. Skylar Erickson and Grizzle have also been key contributors at the service line, averaging 0.35 aces per set.
The Cowgirls will kick off the week with a road matchup against Air Force on Thursday. Air Force is led by Ella Tschuor and Ashley Bible on the offensive end, while Grace Fiaseu anchors the defense with 61 total blocks. Jordan Suan leads the Falcons in digs with 244 on the season. Air Force has found success at home this season, with both of their wins coming in front of their home crowd.
On Saturday, Wyoming will return home to face off against New Mexico. Lauryn Payne leads the Lobos with 3.43 kills and 3.64 points per set, ranking ninth in the Mountain West in both categories. Defensively, New Mexico has been one of the top teams in the league, holding opponents to just a .194 hitting percentage. Libero Falanika Danielson and Liepa Lavickyte have been standout performers for the Lobos on defense.
