Bandar Lampung (lampost.co) — Kantor Bahasa Provinsi Lampung recently conducted a workshop aimed at enhancing the language proficiency of journalists in the region. The event, titled „Kemahiran Berbahasa Indonesia bagi Penulis,“ saw the participation of 10 journalists in Bandar Lampung at Hotel Arte on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
Two speakers from the Provincial Language Office of Lampung, Resti Putri and Guspradana, led the workshop and focused on various aspects of language skills, including spelling, word choice, sentence structure, and paragraph formation. The goal of the workshop was to support journalists in using the Indonesian language effectively, which, according to Desi, who opened the event, plays a crucial role in upholding the dignity of the Indonesian language.
In addition to such initiatives, the ministry overseeing the Language Office continues to update the Great Dictionary of the Indonesian Language (KBBI) to meet the evolving needs of the society. „New terms are constantly being added to the KBBI, reflecting the dynamic nature of language,“ Desi explained.
Resti, one of the speakers, delved into the history of spelling reforms in Indonesia. She highlighted the evolution of spelling conventions from the Van Ophuijsen era in 1907 to the Soewandi era in 1947, culminating in the latest spelling standard known as the Perfected Indonesian Spelling (EYD) introduced in 2022. For instance, the word „Jumat“ was spelled as „Jum’at“ in the Van Ophuijsen era, then as „Jumat“ in the Soewandi era, and finally as „Jumat“ in the current EYD.
Guspradana, the second speaker, focused on sentence and paragraph structure. Participants were given tasks and exercises to assess their understanding of the material. „There are differences in writing styles between mass media and the Language Office. Hopefully, this workshop will help journalists enhance their understanding of effective sentence and paragraph structures,“ Guspradana remarked.
Overall, the workshop served as a valuable platform for journalists in Bandar Lampung to refine their language skills and deepen their understanding of Indonesian language standards. Such initiatives not only contribute to the professional development of journalists but also play a crucial role in preserving and promoting the richness of the Indonesian language.
