India advises its citizens to avoid traveling to Bangladesh until further notice

The escalating violence in Bangladesh has prompted the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to issue a strong advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid travel to the country until further notice. The advisory comes in response to a fresh wave of protests that have resulted in significant casualties and widespread unrest. The MEA’s statement highlights the volatile situation in Bangladesh, stating, “In view of ongoing developments, Indian nationals are strongly advised against travelling to Bangladesh till further notice.”

The violence in Bangladesh has claimed the lives of 76 individuals, including 13 police officers, according to reports. The protests, which were initially sparked by student demands for the abolition of a controversial quota system in government jobs, have escalated into broader demonstrations against the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government. Despite the government’s concession to reduce the quota system from 30% to 5%, the protests have continued, with demonstrators accusing the government of using excessive force to suppress dissent.

The unrest has spread across several regions, including the capital Dhaka, and northern districts such as Bogura, Pabna, and Rangpur. Additional reports of violence have emerged from Magura, Comilla, Barisal, and Feni. The situation has led to a significant crackdown by authorities, with police using tear gas and stun grenades to disperse large crowds of protesters demanding Hasina’s resignation. The Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj was attacked on Sunday, although the identities of the attackers remain unknown.

In response to the turmoil, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has labeled the protesters as ‘terrorists’ rather than students and has called for a decisive response to their actions. To ensure public safety, the government has declared a three-day general holiday beginning Monday. The MEA’s advisory underscores the seriousness of the situation in Bangladesh and emphasizes the need for Indian nationals to stay informed and cautious.

Indian nationals currently residing in Bangladesh are urged to exercise extreme caution, limit their movements, and stay in touch with the High Commission of India in Dhaka through emergency contact numbers provided by the MEA. The High Commission of India in Dhaka remains a critical point of contact for Indian citizens in the region, offering emergency support and guidance amid the ongoing crisis.

In conclusion, the escalating violence in Bangladesh has prompted the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to issue a strong advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid travel to the country until further notice. The situation remains volatile, with protests escalating and widespread unrest reported across various regions. Indian nationals in Bangladesh are advised to stay informed, exercise caution, and seek assistance from the High Commission of India in Dhaka during this challenging time.
