The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas recently held an adoption event that resulted in over a hundred pets finding their forever homes. However, the joy of these adoptions was overshadowed by the fact that nearly 150 more pets were brought into the shelter during the same period. This influx of animals is not uncommon during the summer months, as explained by Grey, a representative from the shelter. She mentioned that summer is a busy time for animal shelters, with an average of 90-100 animals arriving daily since May.
One of the reasons for the increase in animal intake during the summer is people moving, sometimes leaving their pets behind. Additionally, the warm temperatures create ideal conditions for kittens to survive, leading to more litters being born and brought to the shelter. It’s not just dogs and cats that end up at the Animal Foundation, as Grey pointed out. The shelter also takes in animals confiscated by the police or animal protection services. Recently, seven chickens were confiscated from a recently evicted apartment, highlighting the diverse range of animals that find their way to the shelter.
While the shelter primarily houses cats and dogs, they also care for fishes, reptiles, birds, and even farm animals. In a recent adoption success story, a peacock found a new home, showcasing the unique animals that pass through the shelter’s doors. Two ducks named Quacky and Quackers were also available for adoption, adding to the variety of pets looking for loving families.
The high volume of animals coming into the shelter has led to a strain on resources, prompting the shelter to close on Mondays to allow staff to rest and catch up on operations. To alleviate the pressure, special adoption events and foster pushes are organized. In July, the shelter reached a „crisis capacity,“ prompting dozens of pets to be fostered. Last weekend, Planet 13 covered the adoption fees, resulting in 101 pets finding homes.
Despite the challenges, the Animal Foundation is grateful for the support of the community. Grey expressed appreciation for the community’s willingness to help during difficult times. The shelter is located at 655 N Mojave Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89101, and is open every day except Monday. With the ongoing efforts of the shelter and the support of the community, more pets will hopefully find loving homes and receive the care they deserve.
