Tampa’s The Hyde Out introduces its edgy elegance

The Hyde Out, located in Hyde Park, is a new restaurant-lounge that has quickly gained a reputation for being both classy and trashy, dirty yet sophisticated. Kip Byrne, one of the minds behind the concept, describes it as a „craft parlor“ where everything from the drinks to the building’s Art Deco elements are handcrafted. The restaurant, which opened at the end of January, is a collaborative project under ANKR MGMT, involving Robert Ibarra of Alfonso Architects and the creative agency Pep Rally’s Jay Giroux and Josh Pearson, with investors including Colby Fox and Renier Gobea.

ANKR’s art-meets-architecture approach is evident in every detail of The Hyde Out’s space at 1809 W. Platt St. The restaurant’s name reflects its split Jekyll-Hyde personality, with multiple rooms that showcase subtle high-and-low transitions. The expansive space includes a speakeasy-style whiskey and wine lounge, sushi and outdoor patio bars, a rentable social room with self-serve taps for beer or wine, a game room, a lounge with communal tables, and the main dining room and bar.

The design team paid special attention to detail in creating the interior of The Hyde Out. Custom-built stools and light fixtures, a wooden owl installation by Pearson, decorative arrows from Schiller’s Salvage, and artwork by David Williams are just a few examples of the thought put into the space. The goal is for guests to discover something new every time they visit.

The craft emphasis of The Hyde Out extends to the food and drink offerings as well. With no freezer in the kitchen, ingredients arrive fresh daily, including the fish for the sushi. Cocktails are batched each day by master mixologist Eric Bloomquist, who also serves as the „vibe manager.“ The menu features inventive sushi rolls, bar favorites like a Philly cheese steak, and will soon include lighter options as well.

The Hyde Out transitions from a lunch and afternoon spot to a dinner and late-night destination, open until 3 a.m. daily. The main room hosts house music, bands, and international DJs with indie and underground influences. The restaurant aims to keep evolving and recreating the space as it grows, with plans for quarterly mural installations on the building’s side in collaboration with local music publication Suburban Apologist.

Overall, The Hyde Out offers a unique and dynamic experience for guests, combining handcrafted elements, innovative food and drink offerings, and a vibrant atmosphere that continues to evolve over time.
