The Department of Workforce Development’s summer employment programme has provided valuable opportunities for young people to apply their academic knowledge and gain work experience. This year, 100 university students and 80 high school students participated in the programme, which aims to align employment opportunities with students‘ academic fields, interests, and career aspirations.
According to a spokesman from the Department of Workforce Development, the summer employment programme is designed to offer meaningful work experiences that enhance learning, foster personal and professional growth, provide exposure to various career paths, and cultivate leadership and decision-making skills. The programme also aims to encourage active citizenship and service, introduce participants to career and employment competency standards, and support the development of career goals by connecting work experience to academic learning.
One university student, Jahmir Celestine, shared his positive experience with the ten-week summer work programme, stating that it helped him learn more about himself and enhance his educational path of becoming a doctor. Celestine also mentioned that he had the opportunity to build long-lasting relationships and looks forward to potentially returning next summer.
Similarly, high school student Joaquin O’Connor participated in the four-week summer internship programme and found the experience to be truly different and valuable. O’Connor highlighted the benefits of working in a new environment with good people, which taught him many lessons and provided networking opportunities. He recommended registering with the Department of Workforce Development as it gives students a head start in their careers, offers scholarships, and helps prepare them for the working world.
During a recent event, students participating in the programme brainstormed, researched, and presented solutions to problems after being placed into one of 12 „ministries.“ Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, emphasized the importance of the programme in providing young people with invaluable work experience that prepares them for future careers. He stated that Bermuda’s Youth Employment Strategy is committed to enhancing readiness for both school and professional success through first-hand workplace experience.
Maryem Biadillah, senior manager of the Economic Development Department, expressed her support for the Youth Employment Programme and highlighted the importance of mentoring future leaders. She thanked the Department of Workforce Development for the opportunity to work with the team each year.
In conclusion, the Department of Workforce Development’s summer employment programme plays a crucial role in preparing young people for successful careers by providing them with valuable work experience, networking opportunities, and mentorship.
