What is causing the decline of Nigerian musicians?

In recent weeks, Nigerian comedian, Brain Jotter, sparked a viral dance challenge with the catchy phrase „Gwo gwo gwo ngwo,“ taken from a song by folktale musician Gentleman Mike Ejeagha in the 1980s. This challenge not only brought attention to Ejeagha but also revealed that he is still alive at the age of 94, making him one of the oldest musicians in Nigeria. However, amidst the excitement of the dance challenge, a concerning trend emerged – the premature deaths of many Nigerian musicians, actors, and entertainers.

When we look at the longevity of musicians in Nigeria, it becomes apparent that very few have lived beyond the age of 70. Names like Chief Osita Osadebe, Prince Morocco Maduka, Oliver de Coque, and Celestine Ukwu, among others, all passed away at relatively young ages. Similarly, actors and actresses in Nollywood have also faced untimely deaths, with only a handful making it past the age of 70. The causes of these premature deaths are often attributed to heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, kidney failure, and cancer.

Comparing this trend to Western entertainers, who often live well into their 80s and 90s, raises questions about the lifestyle and healthcare practices in Nigeria. While access to quality healthcare plays a role, the primary culprit identified by doctors is lifestyle choices. Poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, and unhealthy habits contribute to the high incidence of heart-related diseases and other health issues among Nigerian entertainers.

Despite improvements in healthcare and rising life expectancy rates in Nigeria, the entertainment industry still grapples with the loss of talented individuals at young ages. Successful musicians, who have the means to afford better healthcare, are not exempt from these health challenges. The prevalence of artificial foods, lack of physical activity, and the pressures of modern life all contribute to the health issues faced by entertainers in Nigeria.

On a positive note, there are signs of progress in increasing life expectancy in Nigeria. Prominent figures like Chief Edwin Clark, Prof. Wole Soyinka, and General Yakubu Gowon, who are in their 90s, demonstrate that longevity is achievable with the right lifestyle choices and healthcare practices. In local communities, elders like the Igwe of Nnewi and other individuals in their 90s serve as examples of aging gracefully and maintaining good health.

In conclusion, the premature deaths of Nigerian musicians, actors, and entertainers highlight the need for a closer examination of the factors contributing to their early demise. By promoting healthier lifestyles, prioritizing regular medical check-ups, and addressing the root causes of common health issues, we can work towards ensuring that our talented entertainers have the opportunity to live long and fulfilling lives. It is essential to protect and preserve the lives of these individuals who bring joy and entertainment to audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
