Kemi Olaitan in Ibadan: Oyo State Inaugurates Rule of Law Enforcement Authority Board
In a bid to prioritize the enforcement of laws and regulations in Oyo State, the acting Governor, Bayo Lawal, recently inaugurated the Rule of Law Enforcement Authority Board in Ibadan. This move underscores the commitment of the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration to securing the lives and properties of residents in the state.
The establishment of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority, signed into law by Governor Makinde on April 12, 2024, aims to coordinate and complement the implementation of various laws and regulations related to health, environmental standards, asset management, maintenance, and road traffic safety. The Authority, headed by Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd), is tasked with ensuring compliance with these laws and regulations by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
During the inauguration ceremony, Acting Governor Lawal emphasized the importance of the Rule of Law in maintaining a functioning society. He highlighted the administration’s dedication to justice, transparency, and accountability, which are essential for upholding the rights of individuals, maintaining social order, and fostering an environment conducive to freedom and opportunity.
Lawal also stressed that effective law enforcement goes beyond deterrence and punishment; it also involves prevention, education, and community partnership. To this end, the administration established the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socio-Economic Development (OMASED) to promote public orientation, sensitization, and advocacy on socio-economic issues, including state laws.
Members of the newly-inaugurated governing board include key officials such as the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Commissioner for Agriculture, and the Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority. These individuals are expected to work collaboratively to ensure the enforcement of environmental sanitation laws, anti-grazing laws, traffic laws, and other relevant regulations.
In her remarks, Justice Aderemi (rtd), the chairperson of the board, reiterated the board’s commitment to enforcing existing laws and regulations related to the environment, traffic, and anti-grazing. She emphasized the importance of ensuring compliance with these laws to maintain order and safety in the state.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by top government officials, including the Chief Judge of Oyo State, the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, and other dignitaries. The presence of these officials underscores the significance of the Rule of Law Enforcement Authority in promoting adherence to laws and regulations in Oyo State.
