Self-driving delivery vehicles in Mountain View are becoming faster

Nuro, a Mountain View-based company, has recently received approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to test its latest self-driving delivery vehicle, the R3, in four Bay Area cities. This marks a significant milestone for the company as it demonstrates the maturing technology of its autonomous vehicles. The R3 is an upgraded version of Nuro’s previous fleet, boasting larger size, increased speed, and longer range on a single charge.

Unlike traditional self-driving vehicles, the R3 is designed specifically for delivering goods rather than transporting passengers. However, Nuro’s Chief Operating Officer, Andrew Chapin, hinted at the possibility of expanding the vehicle’s capabilities in the future. With advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence, Nuro sees potential for broader applications beyond local goods delivery.

Nuro’s partnership with Uber Eats has already seen successful pilots using its Toyota Prius fleet in autonomous mode. The R3 will operate similarly in terms of delivery process and functionality, with the key difference being the absence of a safety driver. This latest iteration of Nuro’s self-driving vehicle can travel at speeds of up to 45 mph, allowing for a wider deployment area and increased efficiency in commercial deliveries.

In terms of safety, Nuro has a commendable track record, surpassing one million autonomous miles across all its fleets without any at-fault incidents. While there have been a few minor collisions involving Nuro’s vehicles this year, the company has taken proactive measures to ensure public safety. Collaborating closely with local jurisdictions, Nuro has conducted perception testing and outreach programs to educate communities on interacting with its autonomous vehicles.

Nuro’s commitment to building trust within the community is evident through its partnerships with local authorities and public demonstrations. The company has worked closely with the Mountain View Fire Department to ensure that its autonomous vehicles can safely navigate around emergency vehicles and equipment. By prioritizing safety and public engagement, Nuro aims to pave the way for the widespread adoption of self-driving technology.

As Nuro prepares to showcase the R3 at the upcoming Arts and Wine Festival in downtown Mountain View, the company continues to push the boundaries of autonomous delivery services. With plans to expand its commercial deliveries in the Bay Area and Houston, Nuro is at the forefront of revolutionizing the way goods are transported and delivered. As the technology continues to evolve, Nuro’s self-driving vehicles are poised to transform the future of transportation.
