The CrossFit community was rocked by tragedy on Thursday morning as a competitor in the CrossFit Games died while competing in a swimming event on Marine Creek Lake in Fort Worth, Texas. The athlete, identified as 28-year-old Lazar Dukic of Serbia, was participating in a 3.5-mile run followed by an 800-meter swim when he went missing in the water and did not resurface.
CrossFit CEO Don Faul expressed deep sadness during a news conference, stating that they were working closely with authorities on the investigation into Dukic’s death. The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office had not yet determined the cause of death, leaving many questions unanswered.
Officials from the Fort Worth Fire Department were called to assist police after it was reported that a participant in the event was missing in the water. Despite having safety personnel on site, the search and rescue efforts were unsuccessful in locating Dukic in time.
Lazar Dukic was not just a competitor in the CrossFit Games, but also a water polo player and athlete ambassador for FITAID, a sports drink brand.
