Enovix, a next-generation 3D silicon-lithium battery design and manufacturing company, has made significant strides in the high-performance battery technology industry since its founding in 2007. Recently, on August 8, the company announced the opening of its first high-volume manufacturing facility, Fab2, in Malaysia. This move marks a major milestone for Enovix as it prepares to commence large-scale mass production in Penang, Malaysia.
Enovix CEO Raj Talluri highlighted the company’s unique goal of manufacturing 100% active silicon batteries, a technology and manufacturing approach that sets them apart from other battery manufacturers. With the increasing demand for energy density and quantity in device batteries due to the rise of AI and emerging applications, Enovix is well-positioned to not only meet the needs of smartphones and wearable devices but also cater to computers, electronic equipment, and electric vehicles (EVs).
Enovix’s decision to invest a total of US$1.2 billion in Malaysia over the next 15 years demonstrates their commitment to expanding their global presence. Listed on NASDAQ and headquartered in the US, Enovix has strategically expanded its operations in India, South Korea, and Malaysia in recent years, establishing strong ties with China’s electronics industry.
Malaysia’s semiconductor industry has seen significant growth, with exports reaching MYR575 billion in 2023. This performance is attributed to the entry of globally renowned semiconductor companies into Malaysia, making it the largest supplier of US semiconductors. Penang, in particular, has emerged as a key hub for the semiconductor and electronics industry, hosting major companies like AMD, ASE, Micron, and Infineon.
In an interview with DIGITIMES, Raj Talluri praised Malaysia’s long-standing support for the semiconductor industry, highlighting the availability of skilled talents and excellent infrastructure. The government’s substantial support and favorable geographic location for transportation make Malaysia an ideal location for the development of cutting-edge technology in the semiconductor and electronics industries.
Jagdeep Singh Deo, Deputy Chief Minister of Penang, emphasized the critical role that Penang plays in the global semiconductor industry, with over 400 multinational companies and 6,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in the region. As companies like Enovix establish a strong presence in Penang, there are opportunities for collaboration with local SMEs, creating more business opportunities and fostering growth in the region.
Enovix’s partnerships with local electronics manufacturers in the Penang Science Park showcase their commitment to fostering collaboration and driving innovation in the semiconductor industry. With the opening of Fab2 in Malaysia, Enovix is poised to lead the way in high-performance battery technology and contribute to the growth of the semiconductor industry in the region.
