North East Gardens Opening Gates for Charity During Summer’s Open Garden Season

This summer, more than 20 private gardens will open to the public for a limited time across the North East. Each year, the National Open Garden Scheme sees usually private gardens open to the public, charging an admission fee which is then donated to charity. In 2023, £3.4 million was raised from the opening of more than 3,500 private gardens across the whole of the UK.

The donations were split between beneficiaries including Marie Curie, Macmillan Cancer Support, and Hospice UK. In 2023, six Northumberland gardens opened in aid of HospiceCare North Northumberland, including Hedgeley Hall in Powburn, Blagdon House, and the Friary at Alnmouth – with around 3,000 people visiting each one. It raised £31,700 which will fund a full-time hospice nurse for a year. A spokesperson for HospiceCare North Northumberland said that people from all over the North East visit their open gardens events.

The money raised goes to support the running costs of our clinical services for people in North Northumberland living with a life-limiting illness. All our services are free at the point of delivery so we rely on events like this to fund the services.

The upcoming open gardens events in the North East include a variety of locations, each offering a unique and beautiful experience for visitors. From the historic Belsay Hall, Castle, and Gardens in Northumberland to the tranquil Whalton Manor Gardens in Morpeth, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Other notable gardens opening their gates to the public include Ferndene House in Ryton, Tyne and Wear, Thornton Hall Gardens in Darlington, County Durham, and Hill House in Haydon Bridge, Northumberland. Each of these gardens offers a different perspective on the beauty of nature and the joy of gardening.

Visitors can also explore the stunning gardens at Crook Hall in Durham, Lorbottle Hall in Alnwick, and Oliver Ford Garden in Consett. These gardens showcase the hard work and dedication of their owners, who have created beautiful and inspiring spaces for all to enjoy.

For those interested in history and architecture, Capheaton Hall in Northumberland offers a glimpse into the past with its grand hall and picturesque gardens. St. Margaret’s Allotments in Durham and Brancepeth Village Gardens also provide a unique look at how gardening has evolved over the years.

In addition to enjoying the beauty of these gardens, visitors can take pride in knowing that their admission fees are going towards a good cause. By supporting the National Open Garden Scheme, they are helping to fund vital services for those in need, such as hospice care and support for individuals living with life-limiting illnesses.

Overall, the open gardens events in the North East offer a wonderful opportunity for people to connect with nature, explore beautiful landscapes, and support important charitable causes. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, these events are sure to provide a memorable and fulfilling experience for all who attend.
