The India Society of Worcester is gearing up for its annual India Day celebration, set to take place on Aug. 10 at the DCU Center in Worcester. This year’s theme, „Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — One World One Family,“ highlights the unifying concept of one world, one family that is deeply rooted in Indian culture. The phrase, which is in Sanskrit, emphasizes inclusivity and invites people from all backgrounds to come together and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of India.
According to Balki Chandrakasan, secretary of the India Society of Worcester, the goal of India Day is to showcase the considerable cultural richness of India and to bring people together in a spirit of unity and harmony. The event coincides with Aug. 15, 1947, the date when India formally achieved independence from British rule after over 200 years.
The India Society of Worcester, a volunteer nonprofit organization founded in 1963, has seen significant growth over the years, as has the scale of its India Day celebration. Last year’s event drew close to 3,000 people and was deemed a great success. This year’s India Day promises to be even bigger and better, with a wide range of cultural performances, music, dance, art exhibitions, and activities for children and youth.
One of the main attractions of India Day is the delicious Indian cuisine offered by about 40 vendors. The event also features a Health Stop program providing free health screenings, a business expo, and a job fair with several employers represented. The event aims to cater to a diverse audience and offers something for everyone to enjoy.
Independence Day in India on Aug. 15 is a significant national holiday, akin to July 4 in the United States. The celebration is marked by parades and festivities in every town and city across the country. The Indian community in Greater Worcester has grown considerably since the founding of the India Society of Worcester, with many professionals and specialists in various fields contributing to the vibrant community.
The India Center at 152 Main St., Shrewsbury, serves as a focal point for the society’s activities, offering a wide range of programs and services to support the Indian community in Greater Worcester. The center hosts the Health Stop program, cultural and language schools, senior activities, women’s empowerment groups, and sports and games.
In addition to India Day, the India Society of Worcester actively participates in community events and collaborations, such as the Diwali Fall Community Day with the Worcester Art Museum. The society’s mission is to unite and empower the community through cultural celebrations and outreach programs.
With the theme of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the India Society of Worcester aims to foster a sense of unity and inclusivity among all individuals, regardless of background or ethnicity. India Day serves as a platform to celebrate diversity, promote cultural exchange, and strengthen community bonds.
