Poll finds that the majority of colleges are focusing on online versions of on-campus programs

The landscape of online education in higher education is rapidly evolving, with colleges increasingly prioritizing the creation of virtual versions of on-campus classes and programs. According to the ninth Changing Landscape of Online Education report, roughly two-thirds of colleges are focusing on developing online versions of existing programs. This shift is likely driven by the ease of adapting current programs for online delivery compared to launching entirely new academic programs.

However, the report also highlights that nearly half of chief online learning officers are prioritizing the launch of new online programs that have no campus equivalent. This indicates a growing trend towards expanding online offerings beyond traditional face-to-face programs. Colleges are recognizing the importance of meeting the needs of both prospective and current students through online education.

One of the key findings of the survey is that online offerings enable colleges to recruit students both within their regions and beyond traditional borders. This flexibility in reaching a wider student population is driving growth in online enrollment, with 46% of respondents reporting that online programs are outpacing growth in on-campus programs. This trend underscores the importance of online education in expanding access to higher education.

The survey also sheds light on the future markets for online education, with adult undergraduates pursuing college degrees emerging as a top priority for colleges. As the number of traditional-age students entering college is expected to decline in the coming years, colleges are focusing on attracting adult learners to sustain enrollment. Additionally, graduate students pursuing degree programs are seen as an important market for online education, highlighting the demand for advanced degrees in a competitive job market.

The report also delves into the role of online program management companies (OPMs) in supporting colleges in launching and running online programs. While OPMs can provide valuable expertise and resources, there are concerns about their impact on the cost and quality of online education. The recent bankruptcy of 2U, a prominent OPM, has raised questions about the stability of these partnerships and the need for safeguards to protect students in case of OPM failures.

Overall, the survey offers valuable insights into the evolving landscape of online education in higher education. Colleges are increasingly leveraging online platforms to expand access, recruit new students, and meet the changing needs of learners. As the demand for online education continues to grow, colleges will need to adapt their strategies to ensure the quality and sustainability of their online programs.
