The graduate students of the Communication and Development Studies program embarked on a transformative journey to Brazil in May 2024 to delve into the legacy of Paulo Freire, a renowned educator and philosopher known for his critical pedagogy framework. The primary objective of the trip was to immerse themselves in Freire’s principles of dialogue and social justice by engaging with various projects and organizations inspired by his work. One of the highlights of their visit was a profound conversation with Nita Freire, the wife of Paulo Freire, who at 91 years old, continues to champion his educational philosophy.
During their stay in Brazil, the group explored cities such as Sao Paulo, Fortaleza, Juazeiro do Norte, and Nova Olinda, each offering unique insights into the application of critical pedagogy in different contexts. In Fortaleza, they visited the Four Sticks Project, which implements Integrated Community Therapy (ICT) developed by Dr. Adalberto Barreto. This innovative approach to mental health care emphasizes group dialogues and support networks, drawing inspiration from Freire’s pedagogy of hope. The students actively participated in various therapeutic activities, gaining a firsthand experience of the transformative power of community engagement.
Their next stop took them to the Casa Grande Foundation in Juazeiro de Norte, where they encountered a vibrant community-driven initiative focused on social and cultural education for children and youth. Led by founder Alemberg Quindins, the foundation empowers children to share their stories through media, fostering leadership skills and preserving local heritage. The students witnessed the impact of hands-on learning and community participation in nurturing young minds and promoting cultural sustainability.
In Fortaleza, the group met with faculty members from the University of Ceará to explore potential collaborations and partnerships between academic institutions. This meeting laid the groundwork for future joint projects and initiatives that could benefit both universities and contribute to educational innovation in Brazil and beyond. The trip served as a catalyst for building relationships with key organizations and individuals driving education reform in the country.
As the students returned from their enriching journey, they are now working on a documentary that will showcase Paulo Freire’s enduring legacy in education. Through interviews with Nita Freire and other educational reformists in Brazil, they aim to shed light on the transformative impact of critical pedagogy on society. The trip organizers express their gratitude to the various units and individuals who supported and facilitated this immersive learning experience, paving the way for future collaborations and knowledge exchange.
In conclusion, the students‘ visit to Brazil not only deepened their understanding of Paulo Freire’s teachings but also inspired them to actively engage in social change and community development. By forging new partnerships and documenting their experiences, they are poised to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on education reform and social justice, embodying the spirit of critical pedagogy in action.
