U.S. Department of Energy Seeks Feedback to Significantly Boost Energy Efficiency in Semiconductor Applications

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) has recently released a request for information (RFI) to gather feedback on the Energy Efficiency Scaling for Two Decades (EES2) Initiative and the draft EES2 Research and Development (R&D) Roadmap. This initiative aims to increase the energy efficiency of semiconductor applications by 1,000-fold over the next twenty years.

Semiconductive materials, such as silicon, play a crucial role in the construction of various technological devices like data centers, smartphones, computers, solar cells, and electric vehicles. However, despite the increasing demand for these products, energy efficiency improvements in the semiconductor industry have not kept pace. In fact, since 2010, overall semiconductor application energy use has been doubling every three years. If this trend continues, the semiconductor industry could consume nearly 20% of global energy production by 2030.

The EES2 National Initiative seeks to address this issue by accelerating energy efficiency improvements in the semiconductor industry. By doubling energy efficiency every two years, the initiative aims to enhance the economic competitiveness of American microelectronics manufacturers and strengthen domestic clean energy supply chains.

AMMTO is inviting input from various stakeholders, including industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and others, on the EES2 Initiative goals and objectives, the roadmap document, and the process for future steps. Feedback on the initial version of the roadmap is particularly valuable in shaping the direction of the initiative.

The EES2 Initiative not only focuses on improving energy efficiency in the semiconductor industry but also aims to facilitate the rapid adoption of these technologies across different sectors. By staying responsive to market and environmental demands, the initiative seeks to drive innovation and sustainability in the industry.

Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their responses to the RFI electronically to micro.electronics@ee.doe.gov by September 30, 2024. This feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the future of energy efficiency in the semiconductor industry and advancing clean energy technologies.
